A self-taught artist, Barbara Simpson has been creating art for many years.  She began seriously drawing and painting at the age of five, literally drawing or painting on every surface that was available every chance she got.

For nearly 13 years, she has been working and teaching at her working studio and gallery in Millbrook.   Her work includes a variety of subjects and media, covering a multitude of moods and personalities.  Although she shifts gears often, changing from one medium to another and going from one extreme to the other with her color palette, her style always comes through.  Her work is predominantly acrylic or watercolor, but she also works with casein, oil, pastel, and charcoal.  In addition to her 2-D work, she also creates custom designed canvas floorcloths, wallhangings in silk and linen, painted furniture and murals and clay sculpture.

Barbara’s work has been selected for such prestigious juried shows as the Energen Art Show in Birmingham, Alabama Wildlife Federation’s Annual Flora and Fauna Art Show, Eastern Shore Art Association’s Members Juried Show in Fairhope, and the Selma Art Guild’s members juried show.  She has won numerous place and purchase awards and most recently received an award of merit in the 2008 AWF Flora and Fauna Art Show.

Barbara has served as the Artist in Residence 2006, 2007, and 2008 for the Montgomery Arts Council at the Armory Learning Arts Center in Montgomery, teaches classes for the City of Prattville through the Cultural Arts programs, and is the teacher for the Artability program for mentally-challenged adults at Smith Center in Prattville.  Barbara is the co-founder and artist consultant for the Alabama Wildlife Federation Annual Flora and Fauna Art Show and the recipient of the 2006 Volunteer Award from AWF presented at the Governors Awards banquet.

Barbara is a member and past president of Elmore County Art Guild and member of the Prattauga Art Guild serving as chairman of the Youth Art Show and committee member for the Fountain City Arts Festival and the Annual Fall Art Show.  In addition, Barbara is a member of the Montgomery Art Guild, Selma Art Guild, and a supporting artist member of the Eastern Shore Art Association.  She has worked with Nancy Raia of Fairhope with the Very Special Arts program, working with blind artists.  And recently Barbara has become a member of the Board of SAC’s Gallery.
